Overview

These settings apply to all AI translations in your project, including bulk translations from the Translating Products workflow. Changes only affect future translations — previously translated content is not modified.
General
The General tab controls the core translation behavior that applies to all fields and languages by default.Translation Mode
- Strict mode — When enabled (default), translations are direct 1:1 without any style changes. This is the safest option for technical or regulated content. Turn it off to customize tone and style.
- Tone of voice — Only available when strict mode is off. Choose a preset tone (e.g., professional, casual, persuasive) or select Custom to write your own tone description.
- Translation style — A slider from Literal (1) to Balanced (3) to Creative (5). Only available when strict mode is off. A higher value gives the AI more freedom to adapt phrasing for the target language.
Content Handling
Control how specific content types are handled during translation.- Preserve brand names — Keep brand names, model numbers, and proper nouns untranslated. Enabled by default.
- Preserve formatting — Keep HTML structure, markdown, lists, and tables intact. Enabled by default.
- Unit handling — Choose how measurements and units are handled:
| Option | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Keep original units | Units stay as-is (e.g., inches remain inches). |
| Convert units | Units are converted to the target locale’s standard (e.g., inches to centimeters). |
| Show both | Both original and converted units are displayed. |
- SEO optimization — Optimize translated meta fields for search engines in the target language. Disabled by default.
Additional Instructions
A free-text field where you can write custom instructions that are appended to every translation request. Use this for project-specific rules like “Always use formal language” or “Never abbreviate product names.”Fields

Product Fields
You can configure instructions for each of these built-in fields:- Product Name
- Description
- Short Description
- Meta Title (SEO)
- Meta Description (SEO)
- Meta Keywords (SEO)
Attribute Fields
Custom attributes from your catalog also appear here, grouped by their attribute group. You can configure them the same way as product fields.Per-Field Options
Expand any field to configure these options:- Translate this field — Toggle to enable or disable translation for this specific field. Useful if you want to skip translating certain fields like SKU-based names.
- Translation instructions — Specific instructions for this field only (e.g., “Keep the product name under 60 characters” or “Use action-oriented language”).
- Max character length — Set a character limit for the translated output. Leave empty for no limit.
- Output format template — Define a template for the translated output using variables:
| Variable | Description |
|---|---|
{{product.name}} | The product’s name. |
{{product.description}} | The product’s description. |
{{brand.name}} | The product’s brand name. |
{{global.store_name}} | Your store name. |
{{attribute.code}} | Any custom attribute value (replace code with the attribute code). |
{{product.name}} - {{brand.name}} would produce “Wireless Headphones - SoundMax” in the translated output.
Languages

Adding a Language Override
Click Add language… and select a language from your project’s configured locales. Each language override includes:- Formality — Choose Default, Formal, Informal, or Neutral. This is especially useful for languages with formal/informal distinctions (e.g., “Sie” vs. “du” in German, “vous” vs. “tu” in French).
- Tone override — Override the general tone of voice for this specific language. Select “Inherit from general” to use the global setting.
- Language-specific instructions — Custom instructions that apply only to this language (e.g., “Use formal ‘Sie’ for German” or “Use British spelling for English”).
You can add as many language overrides as you need — one per locale configured in your project.
Categories
The Categories tab lets you define translation rules for specific product categories. This is useful when different categories require different terminology or translation approaches.Adding a Category Override
Click Add category to select categories from your catalog tree. For each category override you can configure:- Translation instructions — Category-specific translation instructions (e.g., “Use technical terminology for electronics” or “Keep a playful tone for children’s products”).
- Terminology notes — Preferred terms, glossary notes, and naming conventions specific to this category.
Dictionary

Adding Dictionary Entries
Click + Add term to create a new entry. Each entry includes:- Source term — The original term in your primary language.
- Keep as-is — Toggle this on to keep the term untranslated in all languages (useful for brand names, product codes, or technical terms).
- Context — Optional description to disambiguate the term’s meaning (e.g., “audio product category” vs. “computer mouse”).
- Translations — One input per target language to define exactly how this term should be translated.
Bulk Edit Mode
Click Bulk edit to switch to a text-based editor for adding or editing multiple entries at once. The format is:| keep-as-is after the term to prevent translation.
Saving Changes
When you modify any setting, a save bar appears at the bottom:- Save changes — Persists your translation settings to the project.
- Reset — Reverts all changes to the last saved state.
