Set which category is the primary (main) category for your products. Many e-commerce platforms use the primary category for breadcrumbs, canonical URLs, and product organization.

How to use it

Select products

Check the products you want to update, or use filters and select all matching results.

Open Bulk Edit and choose Set Primary Category

Click Bulk Edit, then search for “Set Primary Category” or find it under Categories & Organization.

Pick the primary category

Select a single category to set as the primary category for all selected products.

Configure options and apply

Choose whether to auto-assign the category if products aren’t in it yet, then click Apply.

Tips

  • Leave Add category if not already assigned on to ensure all selected products end up with the primary category — even if they weren’t in it before.
  • The primary category is what most platforms use for breadcrumbs and canonical URLs, so getting this right impacts SEO.
  • Filter by category first, then set the primary — this way you’re only affecting products that are actually in the relevant category tree.
